Exhibit: Colonial Crossings: Art, Identity, and Belief in the Spanish Americas

Step into history at the Johnson Museum with Colonial Crossings, the first Latin American colonial art exhibition hosted at Cornell. This exhibition explores over 300 years of artistic traditions from Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines during Spanish colonial rule. Featuring religious images, portraits, and luxury goods, Colonial Crossings delves into the cultural exchanges between Europe, the Americas, and beyond. It highlights the resilience and creativity of Indigenous, Black, and mixed-race artists while examining the legacies of colonization, evangelization, and the transatlantic slave trade.

Colonial Crossings was co-curated by Dr. Andrew C. Weislogel, Seymour R. Askin, Jr. '47 Curator of Early European and American Art at the Johnson Museum of Art, and Dr. Ananda Cohen-Aponte, Associate Professor of Art History and Visual Studies, and the students of Colonial Connectivities: Curating the Arts of the Spanish Americas (ARTH 4166/6166)

Exhibit: Larry Fink: Social Graces

Visit the Johnson Museum for Larry Fink: Social Graces, an exhibition showcasing the renowned photographer's exploration of two contrasting social worlds: the opulence of Manhattan’s high society and the simplicity of rural life in Pennsylvania. Fink’s striking black-and-white images capture New York’s elite at lavish events alongside intimate moments of a Pennsylvania farming community, revealing a shared desire—to be seen. His candid, sometimes unflattering, portrayal of the class divide reflects his lifelong fascination with social disparity.

First exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in 1979 and published as a book in 1984, Social Graces remains Fink’s best-known work. The photographs on display were gifted to the Johnson Museum by Gary Davis ’76 and curated by Kate Addleman-Frankel, the Gary and Ellen Davis Curator of Photography.

Admission for everyone is always free.
